How to stay grounded when things feel overwhelming

How to stay grounded when things feel overwhelming
Overwhelm (noun):
    1. bury or drown beneath a huge mass of something.
    2. have a strong emotional effect on something.
    3. defeat completely.
    4. be too strong for; overpower.

Overwhelm has a few meanings, but when most people say they’re overwhelmed, they’re generally referring to that feeling when life piles on too much, too fast.

It’s the feeling when one minute you’re fine, and the next, you’re staring at 32 unread messages, five deadlines, and a sink full of dishes wondering how it all got like this.

Sound familiar?

When life feels like a lot, it’s easy to go down a rabbit hole. You start thinking about everything at once – every task, every news headline, every what-if – and suddenly, your brain’s stuck in overdrive.

Not all humans think and feel this way, but you might be surprised to learn it’s a lot more common than you think.

Here’s the thing: you can’t actually control everything (even though you wish you could). But the good news is you can control the small, simple things right in front of you.

And this is how to do it.

Start small (really small)

When overwhelm hits, your instinct might be to fix it all. Resist the urge. Big solutions feel impossible when your head is full of chaos. Instead, focus on one small action.

Drink a glass of water. Breathe for five seconds. Go for a quick walk around the block. These tiny moments seem simple, but they anchor you. They remind your brain that you’re in charge – at least a little bit.

Remember what’s actually in your control

Now, while you can’t control eve

You can’t control traffic, other people’s opinions, or whether it rains on your picnic. But there are plenty of things that are within your power:

Your actions. Take one small step. Tidy your desk. Answer one email. Small wins build momentum.

Your perspective. You can’t stop every negative thought, but you can choose how long you let it stick around.

How you speak to yourself. Replace “I’ll never get this right” with “I’m figuring it out.” (Trust us, it helps.)

Your boundaries. Protect your energy. It’s okay to say no or take a step back.

Let go of the rest

Some things are just outside your control, no matter how hard you try to fix or plan for them. Letting go doesn’t mean you stop caring; it means freeing yourself from the weight of things that aren’t yours to carry.

You can’t control how someone responds, but you can control how you show up. You can’t change what’s already happened, but you can decide how to move forward.

Come back to the present

When things feel overwhelming, your power lies in the present moment. Focus on what’s happening right now. What can you see, hear, or feel? Notice the way your coffee smells or how the sun feels on your face. These tiny, grounded moments pull you out of the whirlwind in your head and bring you back to what’s real.

Take it one step at a time

You don’t have to have it all figured out. You don’t have to tackle everything at once. Just start with the small stuff – the things you can control. One step, one breath, one kind thought at a time.

And little by little, you’ll find your way back to calm.

Now, take a deep breath in… hold it… and let it out. Feel better?

With love,
