If you look for it, you’ll find joy really is all around you.

If you look for it, you’ll find joy really is all around you.
Life can feel a bit like Groundhog Day, eh?

Wake up. Eat breakfast. Brush your teeth. Get dressed. Go to work. Work. Come home. Walk the dog. Cook dinner. Read. Watch TV. Brush your teeth. Lights out.

Sure, we mix it up occasionally – drinks with a friend, a pottery class, a social game of netball, dinner with mum, your Wednesday evening French class…

But let's face it, the everyday often feels, well, everyday-ish. Even boring, a lot of the time.

Yet social media would have us think everyone else is living a wild life. An adventurous life. A fun life. Definitely not mundane and never boring.

Trust us, nobody's riding the rollercoaster of excitement all the time, no matter what their social media feed says.

And yet, if you still find yourself feeling like you’re missing out (you’re not) here's a little nudge to help you find joy in the ordinary and embrace a simpler life. Boring-ness and all.

  • Notice the simple pleasures: The snugness of a warm blanket, the taste of a home-cooked meal, the smell of the earth after it’s rained… it's the little things that make life big.

  • Find art in the everyday: The swirls and patterns on a fallen leaf, cracks in old buildings, adorable dog paw prints on the sidewalk – there's beauty if you just look.

  • Seek out connection: Smile at your neighbour, ask your local barista their name if you don’t already know it, say good morning to passersby when you walk the dog. Connection with others is what makes us human, after all.

  • Experience adventure in the ordinary: Shake up your routine. Try a different route to work, experiment with a new recipe, or explore your neighbourhood on foot or by bike.

  • Celebrate the little wins: Nailed a perfect omelette? Hit a new record at the gym? Taught your dog a cool new trick? Celebrate! Sometimes, we focus too much on the “big wins” like marriage, babies, buying a house, a promotion… when really, the smaller wins count just as much.

  • Enjoy having zero plans. Sometimes, the best plan is no plan. Lie on the grass, watch the clouds, enjoy your coffee at the café instead of on the go, or just have a spontaneous chat with a friend. Let life happen.

In our fast-paced world, there’s something quite lovely about a slower, simpler, and yes, even a slightly boring life.

Sending you oodles of ordinary joy,
Nakie HQ
